Holiday impaired driving crackdown begins

Statement issued Tuesday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

WHAT: Impaired drivers be warned … law enforcement agencies throughout the Midwest and nationwide will be cracking down this holiday season in an effort to save lives. The increased enforcement effort is being conducted in conjunction with the Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest. initiative. It will extend through the holidays and conclude on January 2nd.

The intensified enforcement effort against drunk drivers underscores the severity of the problem across the nation. During the month of December 2009, 753 people were killed in crashes that involved a driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher.

Police will be out in force making sure drunk drivers are off the road. No amount of good cheer will be able to save impaired motorists from the consequences of drunk driving. If violators are caught, they will be arrested. No exceptions. No excuses.

WHEN: Through January 2nd, 2011

WHERE: Communities throughout Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
