Miami's Morris doing better

Miami coach Jeff Stoutland said quarterback Stephen Morris is healing quickly after the freshman injured his left ankle at practice Tuesday.

Morris and Jacory Harris have been competing for the starting job against Notre Dame in Friday's Sun Bowl.

Stoutland's decision appeared to be made for him when Morris injured his ankle and left the practice facility with a protective boot on his foot Tuesday.

Stoutland said Morris' injury wasn't as severe as first thought, and that the quarterback was able to take part in a team function Tuesday night after working with the trainers. And Wednesday morning Morris told his coach he was feeling good.

Miami still held Morris out of practice Wednesday, but Stoutland said that is not an indication that Harris will start against the Irish.

"We will see how he is (Thursday) for the walk through," Stoutland said. "I didn't want him putting any pads on, running around. It was still too inflamed, too soon. Just to be safe. He had gotten so many reps prior to coming here I thought the best thing for him was to get some rest.

"I think that probably after (Wednesday night), we will know (who the starting quarterback will be). We are going to go back and watch this film and evaluate the film. We will talk at that point as a staff and make a decision."

Stoutland is scheduled to talk to the media a final time Thursday morning in a joint new conference with Irish coach Brian Kelly.
