Hope tweaks football staff

Brian Rock became the second Purdue assistant coach to leave the program since the season ended.

Rock, who coached receivers, will be the offensive coordinator at Kent State. Linebackers coach Mark Hagen left for Indiana last month.

Head coach Danny Hope announced Monday that he was tagging offensive coordinator Gary Nord with an "assistant head coach" label and that Gary Emanuel will be the sole defensive coordinator next season. Emanuel was co-coordinator with Donn Landholm last year.

Landholm could become a position coach, possibly working with the linebackers, and will continue to work on scouting reports, a release from the school said.

"As last season progressed, it became clear that coach Emanuel was the face of our defense," Hope said in a statement. "He was hired with the mandate to improve our run defense, and we accomplished that while becoming a more physical unit overall."

Hope doesn't expect to fill the positions until after the coaches convention, which runs through Jan. 12.
