In fairness to Dane Fife, I've tried not to compare him to his former coach at Indiana, Bob Knight. But this time, the comparison is there.
In the post-game interview session immediately after IPFW's 107-79 win over Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Tuesday at Memorial Coliseum, Fife was quick to express his displeasure with his team's performance.
Never mind that IPFW had just won by 28. It's the 79 that was the critical number.
I've spent a lot of time around Knight, and he would have done the same thing - only louder, and perhaps with more expletives.
That's a good sign for Fife and the IPFW program - not to be satisfied with a 28-point win.
Frank Gaines led IPFW with 22 points, hitting 10 of 15 shots. A big plus was the 16-point night from 6-foot-8 forward Oleg Kovalov, and the 10-point game from freshman Mike Kibiloski.
Trey McCorkle played only the first minute and a half and re-inured a sore hip. Fife said that the 6-10 center should be able to play Saturday when IPFW faces Summit League-leading Oakland at Memorial Coliseum.
