Verbatim: Driver hits Angola ATM; later dies

Written statement issued Wednesday morning: Stuart W. Hamblen, Angola Chief of Police, released information related to the Farmer's and Merchant Bank ATM crash.

On 1/12/11 at approximately 1:30 a.m. officers were dispatched to an unknown crash in the area of Farmer's and Merchant Bank on North Wayne Street. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found a red 1996 Chrysler Sebring stopped against the Farmer's and Merchant Bank ATM. The driver, a 53 year old Fremont resident, was found unresponsive inside the vehicle. Officers had to break a window to get into the vehicle. The driver was unable to communicate with the officers.

Paramedics from Steuben County EMS transported the driver to Cameron hospital, and later transported the driver to Lutheran Hospital where he died of an apparent medical condition.

A witness at the scene reported that the driver was traveling southbound on North Wayne Street at a slow speed, and for an unknown reason swerved to the left. The vehicle left the roadway, striking a small tree before going through the Pro Fed credit union parking lot. The vehicle then crossed over a curb, striking the ATM.

At this time, it is believed that the driver suffered from a medical condition prior to the crash. The Angola Police Department was assisted at the scene by the: Steuben County Sheriff's Department, Steuben County EMS, and the Angola Fire Department.
