Saves don't get much better than the one Missouri's Rob Nolan made on Fort Wayne's Artem Podshendyalov with two-tenths of a second remaining in the Mavericks' 5-4 victory at Memorial Coliseum on Wednesday night.
Is it any wonder the Komets went after Nolan so hard last summer?
Nolan stopped 37 of 41 shots. Fort Wayne's Nick Boucher stopped 19 of 24.
There was, as you'd expect, much talk in the locker room about the officiating, not just of referee Colin Kronforst, but also of the linesmen, Aaron Mills and Trevor Shively, who botched icing and offsides calls.
Kronforst awarded 9 of 13 power plays to Missouri, including the major and game misconduct Colin Chaulk got for kneeing Nick Sirota. I thought it was worth a minor.
But whatever happens, the Central Hockey League better not suspend Chaulk, not after letting Fort Wayne's Danko Mironovic get away with a worse hit on Dayton's Brandon Naurato.
"I don't think the hit warranted five minutes and a game misconduct," Chaulk said. "I had him lined up, to hit him with my shoulder. ... I was trying, basically, to hit him in the middle of the chest and, at the last second, he jumps out of the way. Your natural reaction is to try and get him still. I'm glad he's OK."
- Fort Wayne's Tab Lardner scored against the team that traded him for future considerations. With the Mavericks, he had three goals and 10 points in 15 games. With the Komets, he has nine goals and 11 points in 19 games.
- Fort Wayne has lost two games in regulation over their last 13 games.
- The secret bobblehead giveaway was of P.C. Drouin.
- Missouri scored on 3 of 9 power plays. Fort Wayne was 0 for 4.
