It's been my contention for quite some time now that the IPFW men's basketball team should get out of Memorial Coliseum, revamp the Gates Center with theater-type seats, and play most of its home games there.
The place is louder, the atmosphere is better, and the home court advantage could come into play considerably more often. Plus, it's better on the IPFW budget.
But some of the IPFW higher-ups like the Coliseum, with its impressive 10,000-seat arena - or 7,000, when the curtain is down.
We're told that was part of the deal of getting into the Summit League - formerly the Mid-Continent Conference; that playing games at the Coliseum was part of the attraction.
If that's the case, then why don't the women play all their games at the Coliseum?
Maybe there's a compromise.
Went to IPFW's practice Wednesday at the Coliseum's Expo Center, where the Mastodons will play Thursday's game against Centenary and Saturday's game against Oral Roberts.
Because the circus is in town, the elephants have pushed the Mastodons out of the big arena into the Expo Center.
The place is perfect for IPFW!
With its current configuration of pull-out theater-type seats on both sides of the floor and another group of seats at one end, there is room enough for around 3,000 fans. Another 1,000 could be added with another group of seats at the other end of the floor.
Put 2,000 fans, plus the band, inside the Expo Center, mix it with a competitive game, and I promise it would provide a better atmosphere than any the Mastodons have had inside the Coliseum's cavernous arena.
It's a basketball jewel that very few people realize exists in this town.
If they're paying attention, the Mad Ants should do the same.
