Six Irish players apply for fifth year

Six Notre Dame players applied for a fifth year with the program, the university announced.

The players applying for a fifth year are offensive linemen Taylor Dever and Andrew Nuss, corner back Gary Gray, tight end Mike Ragone, kicker David Ruffer and safety Harrison Smith.

Coach Brian Kelly announced last week that Ruffer, a former walk-on, would be on scholarship this season, and Smith was named a captain for this season at Notre Dame's award show last Saturday.

Emeka Nwankwo, Steve Paskorz, Matt Romine and Brandon Walker were eligible but didn't apply for a fifth season.
