  • Women's volleyball picked 2nd in Summit

IPFW goes down with a fight

IPFW wound up losing to IUPUI on Thursday, 86-77.

For a time being, it seemed as though the final margin would be significantly more than nine, because the Jaguars were ahead by 20 with nearly 15 minutes still to play in the game.

This is pretty much when IPFW coach Dane Fife sent his 6-foot-10 center Trey McCorkle to the bench for good and sent out a lineup that had the average height of most high school teams.

With 6-5 John Peckinpaugh, 6-4 Frank Gaines, 6-3 Zach Plackemeier, 6-foot Ben Botts, and toss in 6-2 Antwaun Boyd and 6-1 Jeremy Mixon dividing time, the undersized Mastodons made a game out of it for a while, getting within 66-60, before wearing down.

Gaines had 15 points in the second half and finished with 22.
