Irwin being released

Whitko boys basketball coach Rob Irwin was released from Lutheran Hospital after going through treatment for leukemia, according to a post on www.CaringBridge.org entry by his wife, Ann.

"We are getting ready to break out of Lutheran," Ann wrote in the post at 11 a.m. Monday. "Just a little more chemo to finish, then we will go through discharge instructions. Rob is so excited."

Irwin, also the school's athletic director, was told by doctors Jan. 26 that he suffers from chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a disease that causes the body to produce too many mature white blood cells called lymphocytes.

Irwin began receiving chemotherapy treatments at the beginning of February.
