Norwell, Wawasee coaches have connection

Two of the coaches in the Class 3A girls basketball regional at Peru on Saturday have a prior coach/player relationship.

Norwell coach Eric Thornton played for Wawasee coach Kem Zolman as a seventh-grader at Churubusco a few years ago.

"We were probably the worst athletic class in the history of the school," Thornton said. "I think we had two wins that year. He must really love the game to want to continue to coach after that season with us. It's pretty neat to be able to be involved in the same regional with him."

Norwell plays Yorktown in one semifinal, while Wawasee has Concordia in the other semifinal. If the Knights and Warriors both win, they would face each other in the championship game.
