Luers holds off shorthanded Warsaw

As a 12-point lead dwindled down to two against a Nic Moore-less Warsaw team, Bishop Luers looked like it was reeling.

But the Knights responded well to the threat in a 54-51 win over the Tigers at home Friday.

Luers (15-4) led 41-31 at the end of three quarters.

As Warsaw (17-3) shaved the lead to 48-46, Kenny Mullen made a free throw and missed the second. But Jaylon Smith got the offensive rebound, putback and free throw to push the margin to 52-46.

James Blackmon Jr., who led the Knights with 22 points, finished Luers' scoring off with two free throws.

"Playing against a team like Warsaw up 10, that 10 points is not safe," Luers coach James Blackmon Sr. said.

Moore, who averages 28 points and 5 assists, was out of the lineup with a knee injury that could keep him out until the postseason. Jordyn Coon led Warsaw with 20 points and 11 rebounds against Luers.
