Hansbrough named to Big East first team

Notre Dame's Ben Hansbrough opened the first round of Big East postseason honors with what could be an indication of things to come for the senior guard.

Hansbrough was the lone unanimous selection to the All-Big East first team, which was announced Sunday.

Hansbrough was joined on the first team by Connecticut's Kemba Walker, Georgetown's Austin Freeman, Pittsburgh's Ashton Gibbs, Providence Marshon Brooks and St. John's Dwight Hardy.

The Big East player of the year will come from the pool of the six players selected to the first team and will be announced Tuesday during the opening round of the conference tournament in Madison Square Garden.

The postseason teams were chosen by the Big East's head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own players.

Hansbrough led Notre Dame to second place in the Big East this season, averaging 18.5 points (third in the league), 3.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists.

Notre Dame's Tim Abromaitis was a third-team selection after averaging 15.2 points and a career-best 6.2 rebounds.
