    The Komets have aligned with the NHL's Colorado Avalanche and their American Hockey League team, the Lake Erie Monsters.

    Former Komets star Joe Kastelic, who once owned the record for most goals scored in the IHL, died Wednesday at 81. He skated for the Komets from 1953 to 1957 and then again in 1960-61.

    The Komets bolstered their roster with a potential No. 1 goaltender, a former first-round NHL draft pick, a familiar face and player who should be popular with the fans.

Chaulk selected best leader

The CHL's annual "Best of the Best Poll" selected Fort Wayne captain Colin Chaulk as the best leader in the league.

Each of the CHL's 18 teams were given a vote in the 50-category poll, and Chaulk easily beat out Riley Nelson of Colorado and Greg Labenski of Dayton for the honor.

Chaulk also took second in Most Valuable to his Team, behind Dayton's Jeff Jakaitis. And Chaulk finished third in Best Faceoff Man, behind Nelson and Texas' Jason Deitsch.

The Komets' Guy Dupuis took second for Most Gentlemanly Player, behind Nelson. Fort Wayne's Bob Chase was selected second-best broadcaster behind Travis Huntington of Bossier-Shreveport.

Tab Lardner finished third in Best Penalty Killer, behind Mississippi's Louis Dumont and Arizona's Joey Sides.

Lincoln Kaleigh Schrock took third in Best Pound-for-Pound Fighter behind Rapid City's David Simoes and Bossier-Shreveport's Mitch Love, and Schrock was also third in Most Annoying Player behind Bossier-Shreveport's David Rutherford and Arizona's Adam Smyth.

The Komets finished third for Best Fans, behind Missouri and Rapid City, but they also had the third Most Annoying Fans, behind Texas and Wichita.
