I suppose you have to learn to walk before you can dance.
So maybe that's what this WBI tournament for IPFW's women's basketball team will provide - a chance for the Mastodons to test their legs before they eventually get to the NCAA Big Dance.
Since losing to South Dakota State in the second round of the Summit League tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D., IPFW has been lobbying for a postseason tournament in which to play.
The NCAA was out of the question, of course, and the WNIT was filling up. That left the Women's Basketball Invitational, and with a 20-10 record, IPFW thought it was qualified enough to participate.
While the WBI is hardly a household acronym, it gives the IPFW team a chance to extend its season, nevertheless. The opportunity to play at least one more game takes the rookie status off IPFW for future tournaments, and puts the school on other tournament's radars.
At this stage, whether it wins one game or three is inconsequential. In these recent days of "bubble" talk, IPFW finally burst it.
