Notre Dame put to rest some of its past demons Friday afternoon in Chicago.
The Irish opened the NCAA tournament with a 69-56 win over Akron (23-13) in the United Center to move into the third round.
Last season, Notre Dame was bounced in its first game of the tournament. The Irish fell to Old Dominion 51-50.
Notre Dame (27-6), a No. 2 seed in the Southwest Division, will play the winner between No. 7-seed Texas A&M (24-8) and No. 10-seed Florida State (21-10) on Sunday.
The Irish are advancing in the tournament for the first time since reaching the second round in 2008. Notre Dame hasn't reached the Sweet 16 since 2003.
Ben Hansbrough led the Irish with 15 points, and Tim Abromaitis added 14.
