Statement issued Tuesday:
Verizon Wireless announced today that it is bringing the world’s first large-scale 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to Fort Wayne by the end of the year.
Customers in Fort Wayne will join wireless users in 40 other major markets that are already experiencing the fastest, most advanced 4G mobile network in America.
The company plans to offer 4G LTE in more than 145 metropolitan areas by the end of the year, including Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and Lafayette. Verizon launched 4G LTE in and around the Indianapolis International Airport and on Purdue University’s campus in West Lafayette in November.
“For cities that rely on network speed for upcoming events, nothing is more important than advancing our technology to accommodate travel, tourism and the economy,” said John Granby, president –Indiana/Michigan/Kentucky Region, Verizon Wireless. “With the Super Bowl coming to Indiana, we can show Hoosiers first hand that the opportunities with 4G LTE are limitless.”
New 4G LTE devices are already available on the Verizon Wireless updated network, including the HTC ThunderBolt™, which is the first in a suite of consumer-oriented smartphones, tablets, hotspots and notebooks. Other available consumer devices include two USB modems for laptops from Pantech and LG, which transform the wireless experience, offering consumers new ways to connect and share their lives at blazing fast speeds.
All of Verizon’s 4G LTE devices are backward compatible and will work on the company’s 3G network where 4G is not yet available.
Since its initial launch, Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network has provided laptop users with 4G LTE modems with speeds up to 10 times faster than the company’s 3G network. In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.
Verizon Wireless’ 700 MHz spectrum gives the company specific advantages with 4G, including a contiguous, nationwide network license. The company is building its 4G LTE network with the same commitment to performance and reliability for which it has long been recognized. Verizon Wireless’ consistent focus on reliability is based on rigid engineering standards and a disciplined deployment approach year after year.
