The boys basketball state finals will happen Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse without a team from northeast Indiana, only the third time that's happened in the class basketball era.
After Columbia City's two-point loss to Culver Academy in last Saturday's Class 3A semistate, the area was shut out at state for the first time since 2007.
It also happened in 1998, the first year state championships in each of the four classes were used.
Some years, there have been multiple teams down there -- in 2009, 2008, 2004 (three teams), 2003 and 2002.
Harding itself has made a trip to state five times in the last decade, but with the school closing and reopening as a magnet school, that era has pretty much come to a close.
It just seems odd with all the young boys talent in Fort Wayne and the surrounding areas that only one team made it to the semistate, and not a one will at the least be experiencing the agony of defeat at the state finals.
