A little more than 500 fans showed up at the Gates Center to see if IPFW volleyball coach Arnie Ball would reach his 500th career win.
The same group will have to come back Saturday to see Ball try again.
IPFW lost the first two sets, won the third, then lost the fourth in a 3-1 loss to Loyola on Friday.
While the Mastodons have an 11-9 overall record, they are just 2-6 against MIVA opponents.
"We just can't get over the hump," junior Ivan Matos said.
But he said the team is coming on.
Even Ball said Friday's team played better than it did in the earlier match against Loyola, when it lost 3-2.
Matos and Eddie Rivera have picked up the slack with the loss of Elon Fyfield, who is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. Matos had 13 kills and Rivera had 11. Darryl Shank had 16.
