Hey, I'm like everyone else in these parts. I can't imagine Matt Painter leaving Purdue to go to Missouri, either.
If there's anything to it all, it seems at best a sideways career move. Painter's got the Purdue program in a position where he could make real noise with it down the road. So he'd leave his alma mater for a program that historically hasn't had as much success as Purdue has? In a conference that really isn't a step up from the Big Ten?
Then again ... if you let the devil's advocate in the room, he'll tell you that maybe Painter's taken Purdue as far as it can go as a program. And word out of Columbia is the money would be better at Mizzou, if perhaps not significantly so. And he'd have St. Louis as a ready and fertile recruiting source.
So ... maybe it's not so crazy. Which means Purdue probably needs to ante up a raise if it wants to keep Painter around much longer. The man's one of the best young coaches in college basketball. It stands to reason people are going to come after him.
Missouri today. Who knows who else tomorrow?
