Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Mike Brey was named The Associated Press’ coach of the year Friday.
Brey led the Irish to a 27-7 record, the second most in program history, and a second-place finish in the Big East at 14-4, matching the team’s mark for most league victories.
Notre Dame finished the season No. 5 in the AP Top 25, and it was a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament.
The Irish lost in the third round of the NCAA tournament, falling 71-57 to 10th-seeded Florida State on March 20 in Chicago.
Brey is the first Irish coach to win the award, and the honor comes on the heels of him being named the Big East coach of the year for the third time in five years.
