Ants miss out on playoffs

It's 11:24 p.m. inside the Memorial Coliseum on Saturday night, and Joey Meyer has just walked out.

Between watching my laptop that kept track of the Idaho-Utah game, and the one Ben Smith was working on (Ben would periodically put up the Texas-Austin game), Meyer kept vigil, watching, pacing, worrying.

After the Ants' regular-season win over Sioux Falls, Meyer needed both Texas and Idaho to lose Saturday in order to put the Ants into the D-League playoffs.

But when Idaho took a five-point lead with only seconds left, according to my laptop, Meyer sighed, "Oh, well," slung his garment bag over his shoulder and left.

Because the Ants didn't make the playoffs, the end of the 2010-11 Mad Ants season is now official.

"I really wanted to get this franchise into the playoffs," Meyer said when things looked bleak.

Maybe next year.
