Statement issued Tuesday:
FORT WAYNE, IN (April 26, 2011) -- Gardening to Give is a way for members of the community to grow a solution to the widespread problem of hunger in our area. Local landscaping and green industry firms are donating over 600 vegetable seedlings (tomatoes & peppers) to any individual or group pledging to raise the plants and donate the produce to Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana.
The plant give away will be on Saturday, May 14 from 8am to noon at Ag Plus Turf Center, 440 Mourey Street, New Haven. Individuals will receive four plants, groups/organizations are welcome to take larger amounts.
Knowledgeable gardeners will be available at the plant give away to offer advice on proper growing methods. Pots, soil, seeds and other gardening supplies will also be on hand for purchase. All participants in the program that fulfill their pledge to donate produce will be registered to win prizes donated by area corporations that will be given away at a fall party hosted by Felger’s Peat Moss (9912 Valentine Road, Fort Wayne) on Saturday, September 17 from 2pm - 4 pm.
Gardening to Give represents a small action anyone can take to be a part of a much bigger solution to help those in need. Each seedling offers hope that an investment of time and care will yield much more than just food for those that are hungry.
"When this group of companies approached us with this idea we were just so impressed by their passion and the speed in which they brought it all together to accomplish something so positive and beneficial to this community," said Jane Avery, executive director, Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana. "Community Harvest was started using a grassroots approach to fighting hunger in this community and Gardening to Give is the epitome of grassroots hunger relief. We are so grateful to these companies and those who choose to participate in this exciting program."
