Report: Williams lost for the rest of the year

TinCaps outfielder Everett Williams will miss the rest of the season after having surgery to repair a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee, the San Diego Union Tribune reported Sunday.

Williams collided with outfielder Donavan Tate in an April 12 game at Bowling Green.

Tate will be out until around June 1, the Union Tribune reported. Tate suffered a deep bone bruise in his left knee.

Both injuries are far worse than originally anticipated. Tate, selected third overall in 2009, was expected to miss about 10 days. Williams, a second round pick in the same draft, was scheduled to return in a week. Neither player returned after the collision.

Tate has a .316 average, Williams a .300 average. They were the No. 2 and No. 3 hitters in Fort Wayne's lineup. The TinCaps have struggled offensively since. Prior to today's 13-run output, the team had been shutout in back to back games. Fort Wayne went through a stretch in the middle of April where it scored three runs in a game just once.

Two former Fort Wayne players have also suffered setbacks at higher levels in San Diego's system, according to the Union Tribune. Infielder Drew Cumberland is being treated for vertigo. Pitcher Juan Pablo Oramas has had neck spasms.
