Smith on pitching staff

Randy Smith, San Diego's director of player development, discussed Fort Wayne's pitching during a recent visit to Parkview Field.

The TinCaps entered Thursday's game with Lansing with a 4.17 team ERA.

"(Keyvius) Sampson is 4-1 now, he has great stuff. If he can stay healthy, he should be one of the top pitchers in this league," Smith said. "(Zach) Cates has the stuff to be right there, (Adys) Portillo as well. The bullpen has thrown strikes and pitched pretty well.

"(Mark) Hardy and (Noah) Mull have done a good job. I think it's a good group."

Smith discusses the team's slow hitting start, along with the injuries to Donavan Tate and Everett Williams, in a story in Friday's Journal Gazette.
