This morning while eating breakfast, I spotted three Baltimore orioles, a ruby-throated hummingbird and a black-capped chickadee having breakfast too.
I put out sugar water when I saw three bats catching insects in my backyard around the middle of April. I figure insect eating birds like the hummingbirds and orioles would be showing up soon since the insects were out. I try to be a good hostess by putting out the sugar water before I see them. I think they are here feeding on the sugar water for a while before they are noticed.
I saw my first oriole May 1 and put out some oranges and grape jelly. I spotted a hummingbird a few days later. I was surprised to see the chickadee feeding on an orange, sugar water at the oriole feeder, and grape jelly this morning. I didn't know that chickadees had such a sweet tooth.
