Homestead boys golf coach Rod Parker had a mixed reaction to finishing second to DeKalb in the NHC tournament Saturday at Cross Creek.
But all is not lost for the No. 8 Spartans, who lost to the Barons 313-315. Two more teams came within five strokes of the title, Carroll's 316 and No. 5 Norwell's 318.
Homestead, which went 7-0 in the regular season, won the league championship under the NHC's points system.
"And we are taking home the right hardware," Parker said of the NHC title.
On Saturday, the Spartans' No. 1 and No. 2 players, Jon Finley and Tom Kocks, shot 79 and 81 respectively.
Although No. 3 player, Kyle Davis, led Homestead with a 75, Parker said he is still looking for more from his top two players.
"Kocks and Finley could have played better, but the other guys stepped up and played well," Parker said. "Davis had the round of the day for us. I told Kocks and Finley to just grind it out and post a good score. I wanted them to shoot even over the last six holes, and they were 1 under. They had ups and downs today, but they closed the way they needed to."
