I need help.
I grew up in Oklahoma. In a condo. The only things that grew in our yard were my mom's carefully nurtured azaleas, some irises and a few rose bushes. Everything else was pounded into oblivion by the summer sun.
So, here, I have a lovely, verdant back yard with a lot of flower beds.
I recognize the roses (yay!), irises (mom would be proud), and the peonies.
That's about it.
I pull on my gardening gloves and pull out anything that looks like a dandelion or definitely wouldn't have been planted in the middle of the sidewalk. Anything else is kind of a mystery to me.
So, before I'm overtaken by weeds that I think look pretty, I thought I'd snap some photos and ask for help.
The flowers I shot this morning are a lovely purple. They stand about knee-high, and are grouped in a slightly weed-like manner. What makes me unsure is that they have super-long leaves. Think, tall grass prairie clusters with purple flowers in the center.
What do you say? Should I keep it or try to kill it?
Also, how important is this mulch stuff I keep hearing about? I have a lot of shade in my yard, so I'm not too worried about the soil drying out. Maybe I should be? I really don't know.
