They all think Carlos Zambrano should be cast into outer darkness -- Traded as fast as the Cubs can do it? Suspended for the season? Really? -- for his outburst after the Cubs blew another one the other day.
Look. No one in the immediate vicinity of this Blob is going to say Zambrano hasn't become a liability with his continual Mt. Vesuvius impersonations, especially given how poorly he's pitched across the last two seasons. His outbursts tend to be far more hurtful than helpful on most occasions.
However, it was refreshing to hear someone break out of Mediaspeak and, um, speak forthrightly the other night, because it's exactly the sort of thing you never hear, and it's exactly the truth of the matter. The floundering Cubs are playing like a Triple-A team. They are an embarrassment right now. And for heaven's sake, Carlos Marmol ought to know how to pitch (or not to pitch) to Ryan Theriot, a former Cub.
Maybe Zambrano wasn't the best guy to deliver that message. But no one else seemed inclined to deliver it. And whether his motivations were selfish or not -- Marmol blew the save for Zambrano -- it was at least refreshing to hear someone in that clubhouse sound like he cared.
Yeah, he threw his teammates under the bus. But it wasn't like they weren't flattened already.
