Irish land local standout

David Perkins decided to stay in South Bend.

The Washington High School standout announced his oral commitment to Notre Dame on Tuesday at a news conference.

Perkins, who played running back and receiver as well as defensive end and outside linebacker at Washington, ran for 765 yards with three touchdowns on 82 carries last season. He also had 12 catches for 176 yards and four touchdowns.

On defense, Perkins had 63 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and 13 sacks.

He will enter Notre Dame as an athlete and will likely start out as a linebacker, according to Irish Illustrated, the South Bend Tribune and Irish Sports Daily.

Perkins played at Kalamazoo Central High School in Kalamazoo, Mich., in his first two years before coming to Washington, helping the Panthers to a 7-4 record last season.

He reportedly chose the Irish over Tennessee, Iowa, Syracuse and Mississippi State, among other Division I offers.

Perkins is the 10th Irish commitment for the class of 2012.
