Indiana Tech: Graduate engineering degree goes online

Statement issued Wednesday:

Fort Wayne, Ind. – Indiana Tech will begin offering its master's degree in engineering management online in September.

The Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSE) explores issues that face engineers in a variety of fields as they assume more managerial responsibilities. The program uses the expertise gained through an undergraduate degree in engineering or a related field as a base for further education. Course work includes topics such as:

• Environmental health and safety

• Project management

• Enterprise resource planning

• Lean manufacturing

• Quality assurance

• Managerial economics

• Computer integrated manufacturing

• Financial management

Like other Indiana Tech graduate programs, the degree is offered through the College of Professional Studies (CPS) in an accelerated format. Each online course spans six weeks. Although the online classes have specific start and end dates, students can complete assignments at their convenience. The first course in the MSE program, Introduction to Engineering Management, begins Sept. 4.

The university first offered the MSE program at its main campus in Fort Wayne in January 2005. The shift to online delivery will make it available to more students.

"We've had quite a bit of interest in this program throughout the state," said Steve Herendeen, vice president of CPS. "Online delivery allows us to serve students who don't live near our main campus, while giving all of the students in the program more flexibility to balance work and graduate school."

Admission to the MSE program requires a bachelor of science in a technical field, a minimum GPA of 2.5, one undergraduate course in accounting, and one undergraduate course in finance.
