Verbatim: Motorcyclist seriously injured

Written statement issued Tuesday morning:

A Bryan resident was seriously injured when he lost control of his motorcycle and overturned on State Route 15 just north of Ney.

Melvin Schilt, 52, was operating a 1996 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic Electro Glide northbound on State Route 15 when he accelerated well over the posted 55 miles per hour speed limit. He then failed to negotiate a curve and drove off the right side of the roadway.

As he attempted to bring the motorcycle back onto the roadway, he lost control and the motorcycle overturned and Mr. Schilt was ejected. The motorcycle skidded off the left side of the roadway and flipped several times.

Mr. Schilt tumbled approximately 250 feet and landed in the roadway.

Mr. Schilt was flown to The Toledo Hospital via Promedica Air Ambulance where he is being treated for serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Mr. Schilt was not wearing a helmet, and alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash.

Defiance Post Troopers were assisted at the scene by Defiance County Sheriff's Deputies, Ney/Washington Fire and EMS, Delaware Township Fire and EMS, Promedica Air Ambulance, and Rick's Wrecker Service.
