Former Irish player dies

Andre Jones, a starter on the 1988 Notre Dame national championship team and father of current Irish receiver TJ Jones, died Wednesday morning after suffering a brain aneurysm Tuesday, the university announced.

Andre Jones, 42, was an outside linebacker for Notre dame from 1987-90. He had 147 tackles with 12 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles in 42 games over four seasons.

Andre Jones was drafted in the seventh round of the 1991 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he played for the Detroit Lions in 1992 and with the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Andre Jones is survived by his wife Michele and five children.

TJ Jones played in 12 games with seven starts last season for Notre Dame. He caught 23 passes for 306 yards with three touchdowns.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
