Atz’s Ice Cream Shoppe offers Blue Moon ice cream.
Summer Coolers: Ice Cream

Blue Moon: Name that flavor

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is a cult classic. So are checkerboard Vans, White Castle hamburgers and Eric B. & Rakim’s “Paid in Full.” They’re the pop culture items that, for whatever reason, have a small but fanatical, dedicated and often weird following.

But when you’re talking about ice cream, everyone’s favorite cult classic – and this week’s underrated ice cream flavor – is Blue Moon, the mysterious flavor no one can identify. Ask fans about the flavor and you’ll get answers ranging from “honeydew-ish” to “kinda Fruit Loops-y,” but the main flavor – which may change depending on the manufacturer – remains a closely guarded secret, which just adds to the allure.

Blue Moon ice cream is made almost exclusively in Michigan, Wisconsin and other northern Midwestern states. So it’s rare to find it in Indiana, but local ice cream shop Atz’s always keeps some on hand. So there’s no need to wait for an actual blue moon to give it a try. (And when you do, tell us what flavor it is!)

Where: Atz’s Ice Cream Shoppe, 3235 N. Anthony Blvd. and 211 E. Tillman Road.

Cost: 99 cents
