Carroll player, coach part of all-star squad

Two of the key components that helped bring the Carroll baseball team back-to-back Class 4A state championships will be on full display in front of Fort Wayne fans July 9-10.

Jeremy Shelmadine and coach Dave Ginder will be part of the North All-Stars who will play the South All-Stars in three exhibition games at Parkview Field. Shelmadine will be one of four outfielders, and Ginder will be an assistant coach .

The Chargers beat Indianapolis Cathedral in the state title game in each of the past two years, 1-0 and 5-3.

Also, four other northeast Indiana players will be on the North roster: New Haven pitcher Brandon Pease, Leo catcher Andrew Suciu, Concordia outfielder Jake Hayden and Norwell outfielder Landon Curry.

The two teams will play a doubleheader at 11 a.m. July 9, and a single wooden-bat game at noon July 10.

AUTO RACING

Fans can meet Baer Field drivers

Baer Field Speedway will play host to a night of races Saturday, and during intermission, fans will be able to meet drivers and get autographs. Gates open at 4 p.m., 90 minutes before qualifying. Races starts at 7:30 p.m. and will include a six-division show of NAPA late models, modifieds, street stocks, mini stocks, front wheel drives and fun stocks. Admission: $12 for adults; $5 for kids 7-12.

Local team reaches World Series

The Wallen Wolfpac will play in the Baseball Players Association 9U World Series in Battle Creek, Mich., July 20-24. The Wolfpac placed second in the state qualifier in Michigan City last weekend. The team includes Scottie Saylor, Brenden Lytle, Danny Stephen, Gage Ritter, Jackson Miller, Sebastian Kuhns, Jake Shirk, Conner Bedwell, Eddie Bransfield and Carter Hartsock and coaches Greg Shirk, Josh Ritter and Aaron Hartsock.

BASKETBALL

Irish linked to Huskies again

Notre Dame will see defending NCAA champion Connecticut twice during the men’s basketball season for the fifth year in a row and seventh time in eight seasons. The Irish and Huskies were tabbed as repeat opponents when the Big East released the conference’s repeat opponents for 2011-12 season. Notre Dame will also play Rutgers and West Virginia twice this season. The Irish will also have home games against DePaul, Marquette, Pittsburgh, Providence, South Florida and Syracuse. Notre Dame will play at Cincinnati, Georgetown, Louisville, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Villanova.

Preview magazine puts Cougars No. 3

The Saint Francis football team is ranked No. 3 in the Victory Sports Network NAIA preview magazine. Carroll College is No. 1 and St. Xavier is No. 2. Three Cougars are on the VSN “Super Six,” which ranks the top players at each position. Austin Coleman is No. 3 at wide receiver, Corey Cronk is No. 4 among offensive linemen and Anthony Moore is No. 7 at defensive line.

Feds, BCS officials talk antitrust

BCS executive director Bill Hancock met with 10 officials from the Department of Justice’s antitrust division for 90 minutes to explain how the Bowl Championship Series works. Hancock said the tone of the meeting was friendly and that justice officials asked about how the BCS operates, how teams qualify to play in college football’s five most lucrative bowl games, and its finances and history.

Law could allow guns in Lambeau

Lambeau Field officials are trying to determine how the state’s new concealed carry legislation will affect them. The Wisconsin legislation allows the carrying of concealed weapons but not in buildings owned or leased by the state. Green Bay Police Captain Paul Ebel says they are dissecting the legislation and planning to consult with the city’s attorneys and the Packers organization. The NFL says guns are not allowed in any NFL stadium.
