We're Digging It

  • April snow
What a cruel trick the weather played on all the daffodils and hummingbirds that have now been spotted in Indiana.
  • Getting a head start
Last Sunday was a beautiful day to work in the garden. I triple hoed my vegetable garden and buried a soak hose in preparation for the upcoming season.
  • Seedlings are off to a good start
It has been a little over a week since I started some vegetable plants from seeds. 52 out of 56 tomatoes seeds have germinated so it looks like I will be giving away quite a few plants.

Last day to submit your garden photo!

OK, all of you gardeners out there, you have until midnight tonight (Sunday, July 10) to submit a photo for The Dirt's annual garden contest.

Online voting begins July 24. We prefer that you live in northeast Indiana or northwest Ohio, but we won't disqualify readers of The Dirt or We're Digging It just because they don't happen to live in our region.

For information about how to submit your best garden photo, please click here:

The winner will be decided by readers' votes.

Next up, veggie shots

In August, The Dirt will launch its first produce contest. If you are harvesting now, you can shoot it now and send it in after the flower garden contest is finished.

What we're looking for is a photo of your sunflower, tomato, whatever, posed with a person or pet.

Just like the garden contest, the winner gets bragging rights and will be featured in a future edition of The Dirt.
