Fiction: Striking out

Let’s talk about what happened last night. Or what didn’t happen last night.

My Cracker Jack Cupcakes turned out fabulous. The cases were stocked. April and I were ready for a busy night to follow a glorious TinCaps win. I guess I got that much right. The TinCaps win, that is.

The busy night? Not so much.

From 7:05, the start time, to 10, April and I sat at one of the café tables playing Scrabble. We turned Garbage Cookies into ice cream sandwiches. And ate them. We stocked dishes, wiped tables, drank coffee.

When we heard the fireworks, we put away our cups and got ready. April stood behind the register in anticipation, and I at the counter. I fidgeted with napkins and to-go menus. I stared out the window, looking for the glow of headlights.

We did this for 45 minutes. Like complete nerds.

At that point, we (and “we” meaning April) decided enough was enough and we should head home. So we did. We went home at 11 p.m. on a Friday night.

What can I say, an exciting close to an exciting evening.
