Heater recall grows after fires

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Meijer Inc. have announced a voluntary recall of Touch Point Oscillating Ceramic Heaters after fires were reported.

Consumers who bought them from Meijer should return them to the nearest Meijer retail store for a full refund of the purchase price. Those who bought heaters from other retailers should contact Meijer to arrange a refund.

Although there was a recall of the fans in November, discount retailers, dollar stores, flea markets and retail liquidators nationwide sold the heaters through April 2011, the commission said.

The oscillating mechanism in the heaters can short out, posing a fire hazard. Meijer reported it has learned of two fires that resulted in property damage but no injuries, the recall said.

They were originally sold in Meijer stores in Indiana, Ohio Illinois, Kentucky and Michigan.
