Dinners to feature craft beers

If you Trippel over a Fat Tire, you could Somersault into the Abbey.

Sample all of those whimsically named New Belgium Brewing Co. beers during a five-course dinner at Paula’s on Main this month.

It’s one of two craft beer dinners on the menu at local restaurants.

•Paula’s, 1732 W. Main St., will serve the dinner, which is $50, at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 11.

Feast on shellfish scampi, mixed greens with peaches and goat cheese, blackened filet mignon with gorgonzola, potato-crusted halibut, and chocolate cake with bananas foster sauce and vanilla ice cream.

Reservations are required; call 424-2300.

•BakerStreet, 4820 N. Clinton St., will include five Bell’s Brewery ales in a dinner at 7 p.m. Aug. 24.

The menu will feature ahi tuna on wonton with spicy cucumber salad; a salad of baby lettuce, fennel, mandarin oranges and apples; seared duck breast with bourbon-orange glaze and a cherry-andouille sausage risotto; grilled ciabatta with apricots, grapes and three cheeses; and a chocolate hazelnut torte with raspberry truffles.

A representative from the brewery, based in Kalamazoo, Mich., will discuss the styles of beer.

The meal is $50, which is all-inclusive.

Reservations and advance payment are required; call 484-3300.

Restaurants mark owner’s 30 years

To celebrate his 30 years in the restaurant business, Mark Melchi is offering deals this month at both of his restaurants, The Lucky Moose, 622. E. Dupont Road, and Moosewood BBQ in the Marketplace of Canterbury, next to Subway.

They include 30-cent wings (regular and boneless), which are available daily.

You also can get a free birthday meal (up to $10), with ID, on the actual day.

Every Saturday in August, order a sandwich or entrée and add a trip to the salad bar (for yourself) for 30 cents.

All pints of draft beers are $3.

August specials at various spots

Several local eateries are serving special dishes in August.

•Anastasia’s Café, 7121 W. Jefferson Blvd., has a deli slider trio for $8.50, which includes chips, pickle and a house beverage. Applebee’s hosts cats vs. dogs

Cats rule. Dogs drool.

Yes or no?

The Allen County SPCA has teamed up with Applebee’s to find out what area residents think.

Through Aug. 14, participating Applebee’s in northeast Indiana are collecting “votes” for cats or dogs in the form of donations.

Each vote costs $1; or get six for $5.

All proceeds will benefit the local shelter.

Local bartender in competition

Todd Hullinger, head bartender at BakerStreet, soon will head to Indianapolis for the semifinal round of The Nation’s Most Inspired Bartender competition.

For the first round, which was held last month at Club Soda, Hullinger created a gin cocktail called Love in the Rocks. After mixing it, he injects the liquid into a hollow egg made of ice, then cracks the egg before serving.

He’ll compete Aug. 21, and if he does well, he’ll move on to the championship round in Las Vegas.

Love in the Rocks is not yet on the menu at BakerStreet.
