Samuel Hoffman - The Journal Gazette
Without her trumpet, junior Larissa Ladner walks through positioning drills on the football field during practice with the South Side High School Green Machine marching band.

Intense Shot

Camera: NIKON D2Hs

Shutter: 1/3200 s

Aperture: f/2.8

Exposure Setting: Manual (Pattern Metering)

ISO: 200

Strobe Flash: Did Not Fire

Lens Focal Length: 300 mm

White Balance: Manual

Shooter's Comments: With this photo, her intensity is really shown by the clinched fist in place of the trumpet. The sunglasses help, too.

- Samuel Hoffman, Photojournalist

Editor's Note: By using a long lens and a wide-open aperture, Samuel made sure Larissa's face (and sunglasses) were the only things that would be sharp in the final image. If he had used a shorter lens or a smaller f-stop, the people in the background would have been more clear, and the image wouldn't be as striking.
