Basketball prospect reopens recruiting

Derek Willis, a forward from Bullitt East High School in Mount Washington, Ky., backed out of his oral committed to Purdue, according to multiple reports.

On Thursday, Willis posted on his Facebook page that he was going to reopen his recruiting process, and his father, Del Willis, made it official Sunday.

Del Willis told the Lexington Herald Leader that Purdue is still in the mix, and he hopes coach Matt Painter will not pull the scholarship offer his son received from the Boilermakers in April.

Derek Willis' stock began to rise after he averaged 13.5 points and 9.5 rebounds as a sophomore at Bullitt East and because of his performance with his AAU team BA Hoyas.

Willis, who is ranked as high as No. 19 in the Class of 2013 by ESPN, is expected to be pursued by Indiana, Kentucky and Louisville. Willis rated a four-star prospect and the 13th best power forward by

"It's not that he didn't like Purdue, he just wanted to see some of his other options," Del Willis told the Louisville Courier-Journal. "He wanted to make sure it was the right fit. Most of the time, you don't marry the first girl you date. He didn't have anything to compare it to."

Purdue still has commitments from Northrop's Bryson Scott, Kendall Stephens St. Charles East in Illinois and Basil Smotherman of Indianapolis' Lawrence North for the Class of 2013.
