The TinCaps seemed to have things under control with a three-run lead over the Lansing Lugnuts and only three innings to go Monday night.
Especially since relief pitcher Robert Lara sitting down 8 of 9 batters, five on strikeouts.
No such luck.
The Lugnuts wound up winning 6-5, dropping Fort Wayne's lead over West Michigan to one game in the race for the final playoff berth from the Midwest League's Eastern Division.
Things were going smoothly for Lara in the top of the seventh until he gave up back-to-back home runs to Jake Marisnick and K.C. Hobson, though Fort Wayne still led 5-4.
In the top of the eighth, against Chris Franklin, the Lugnuts got a Jonathan Jones single that hopped over the shortstop, B.J. Guinn, and scored Garis Pena and Michael Crouse for a 6-5 lead, in front of 3,861 fans at Parkview Field.
West Michigan defeated Dayton 5-1.
Fort Wayne is 35-28 in the second half. West Michigan is 34-29. Lansing, which already has a playoff spot, is 34-29, too.
