Verbatim: Bicyclist critically injured in hit-skip accident

Written statement issued Friday morning by the Fort Wayne Police Department: At 02:40 a.m. officers of the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the 7200 block of West Jefferson on a man down call.

Once on scene officers found a bicyclist in the West bound lanes of West Jefferson who appeared to have been hit and run.

Medics arrived and transported the man to a local hospital in critical condition. The F.A.C.T team was paged in and took over the investigation.

A short time later a male subject called 911 saying he thought he hit something on his way home this morning. Officers went the mans home and were able to determine that the damage on his truck was consistent with the damage to the bicycle.

Investigators have determined that the bicyclist was traveling West bound on West Jefferson in the center of the North most lane when the black Equinox struck him from the rear and left the scene.

They bicyclist remains at a local hospital in critical condition.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor with both the driver and the bicyclist.

This case remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, The Allen County Prosecutors Office and the Allen County Coroners Office.
