Van driver hurt in rig crash

A crash involving a tractor-trailer rig and van in northern Allen County left a man in critical condition Wednesday.

The tractor-trailer rig, driven by a 38-year-old man, was northbound on O’Day Road when the driver ran a stop sign at West Washington Center Road.

The rig then struck a van going east on West Washington Center, pinning the van’s 36-year-old driver inside the vehicle for 20 minutes before rescue crews freed him, the sheriff’s department said.

Police released neither of the drivers’ identities. Both wore seat belts.

The van’s driver was flown to a hospital in critical condition, and police closed the intersection where the crash occurred for more than an hour.
