Storage unit tip yields cruiser door

A man was charged Thursday with receiving stolen property after investigators said they found the door of a Fort Wayne police squad car in his storage unit.

Adham El-Khatib, 26, of the 1800 block of Wagoner Court, was being held Thursday at the Kosciusko County Jail, awaiting sentencing on a burglary charge.

On May 12, city police, acting on a tip from a confidential informant, searched a storage unit that El-Khatib had rented. During the search, investigators recovered the police car door, court documents said.

The door had been stolen off a squad car that had been decommissioned because of an accident and was parked at a city garage.

An analysis found one of El-Khatib’s fingerprints on the door, according to court documents.

In an interview with police, El-Khatib denied stealing the door but acknowledged that he had possessed it, court documents said.

They did not say how the door was stolen.
