Keys to the game

Fort Wayne struck out 11 times in a 4-1 loss to Lansing in Game 1 of the Eastern Division championship series in front of 1,577 fans Sunday at Parkview Field.

Egan Smith pitched five shutout innings as the Lugnuts took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

Here are the highlights.

Key at-bat: The Lugnuts scored on a strange play in the third inning. Lansing had runners on first and second with one out. Jake Marisnick hit a ground ball to first base. Connor Powers threw to second for the lead out. B.J. Guinn threw back to first, where pitcher Keyvius Sampson was covering. The ball bounced off of Sampson's glove for an error. Oliver Dominguez raced around from second for the game's first run. The Lugnuts led the rest of the way.

Key out: Fort Wayne scored in the first inning in its first two playoff games. The TinCaps were threatening again in the first inning, placing runners on first and second with one out. Luis Domoromo grounded into a double play to end the inning. The TinCaps went 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners on base.

Game 2 preview: Zach Cates (4-10, 4.73 ERA) will be on the mound for Fort Wayne in Game 2, which is 7:05 p.m. Monday in Lansing. Aaron Sanchez, a first-round pick in 2010 (No. 34 overall), has been called up from Toronto's Northwest League team in Vancouver and will pitch for Lansing.

Quotable

"It will take short-term memory. You can't dwell on the past. You just have to move forward. That game is over with. You have to move to the next day and try to get that one."
