Kennel cough at SPCA puts hold on dog adoptions

Kennels closed to the public for canine adoptions – cat adoptions still available

Statement issued Tuesday:

Unfortunately, our dogs have the sniffles. One of our strays that we took in developed kennel cough and shared it with the other dogs in our kennels.

Because of this, we must close our kennels for adoption as they go through a round of antibiotics. We will reopen the kennels on September 23.

Kennel cough is a form of bronchitis and is similar to a chest cold in humans and is contagious to other dogs. They will be better in a couple of weeks.

If you would like to help, the treatment of one dog will cost $20. We currently have 27 dogs in our kennels. Checks can be mailed to Allen County SPCA 4914 Hanna Street, Fort Wayne, IN 46806.

They will also be a bit stir crazy, so dog toys that provide mental stimulation like Kongs or Busy Buddy brand toys would be great.

All cat rooms will remain open for public viewing and adoption and our cats are also available at the PetsMart on Lima Roads and Apple Glen

In the meantime, please consider visiting another shelter to adopt if you are searching for a dog at this time. For a list of dogs in shelters visit www.petfinder.com or www.aspca.org.
