The Cat and the Canary featuring Dennis James on the Grande Page Pipe Organ - 7-9 p.m.
The feature silent film presentation opens with a magic show by Terry Michael Owens and continues with the 1927 film, The Cat and the Canary, starring Laura LaPlante. The film opens to a room of rivals at a spooky old mansion on the 20th anniversary of their eccentric benefactor’s death. As the lawyer reads the will, they all squirm to hear the legacy hinges upon three sealed letters, each to be opened at a strategic point in the evening. According to the will, all heirs must spend the night in the mansion. But, when the lawyer is murdered, LaPlante is the main suspect.
For more than 37 years, Dennis James has played a pivotal role in the international revival of silent films with live music. James began his career as a professional film accompanist at Indiana University while a music student in the late 1960s. He now tours with his own Silent Film Concerts production company to professionally perform to silent films with solo organ, piano and chamber ensemble accompaniments in addition to presentations with major symphony orchestras throughout the U.S. and Canada. James was named Hollywood’s International Ambassador of the Silent Film, bringing silent film programming around the world, most recently with sellout appearances at the Sydney Opera House in Australia and at the dedication of new Esplanade Concert Hall in Singapore.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for students 12 and under. Tickets available at the Embassy box office and Ticketmaster.
