Sock Innovation: Knitting Techniques & Patterns for One-of-a-Kind Socks, by Cookie A, is an Interweave Press book.
As with all Interweave Press books, the reader can expect beautiful photographs, clear illustrations and pleasant layouts.
What I did not expect was the friends-over-tea, chatty, but clear quality of Cookie A's writing.
There are 15 patterns in the book, but I'm most interested in what comes before the patterns.
Cookie A spends the first three chapters of the book unraveling the mysteries, choices and math involved in sock design.
She starts out with a clear statement of where her loyalties lie.
"I have biases and preferences that will become apparent. All the socks in this book are knitted from the top down, and most have ribbed cuffs, a flap heel with gusset, and stockinette wedge toes."
This is an exciting and beautiful book. A great choice for anyone looking to expand their sock knitting - especially from the top down. That's ok, though. It does what it does to perfection.
