Scene where a pedestrian was struck by a CSX train.

Verbatim: Pedestrian struck by train identified

Verbatim: Written statement released Monday morning by the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department:

The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department is currently investigating the death of a pedestrian that was struck by a train Sunday afternoon.

Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department deputies and emergency personal responded to the area of County Road 1250 North and the Bishop Road railroad crossing Sunday at approximately 12:32 p.m. after receiving a report from CSX Railroad that a pedestrian had been struck by one of their freight trains. Officers arrived and located the individual who was identified as Daniel Garza, Jr., 21, 9859 E. Camelot Lane, Cromwell. The Kosciusko County Coroner's Office pronounced Garza dead at the scene from blunt force trauma to his head and upper body.

According to the CSX train engineer and conductor, Garza was apparently walking west on the south edge of the tracks prior to being struck. Train officials stated that they had immediately attempted to slow the train and were activating the whistle and bell prior to the train striking Garza. The incident occurred approximately 2000 feet east of the actual railroad crossing and is located east of the Town of Syracuse.
